Facial Mists 101
I set out on a quest a month ago in search for facial mists that would work well with my sensitive skin. Travelling almost every once or twice a month combined with the hot and humid weather in Singapore, facial mists are a must-have for me. With a myriad of face mists out in the market now, it’s difficult to chose just the perfect one.
I managed to find 5 facial mists that claim to be great for my skin type (acne prone, sensitive, combination skin) and I spent about 1 week on each of them, with day and night application. Here’s my honest review on each of them!
Why I love it:
Just like all Skin Inc products, it does not contain any fragrances or parabens. The packaging of this is an absolute luxury. The mists it produces are extremely fine and it’s a great product to use as a first step to your skincare regime to tone skin and after to set your makeup. It is formulated with Hyaluronic Acid molecules that are 5x smaller so they can penetrate the outer layers of the skin for deeper more long-term hydration.
So far this is my personal favourite and one that I have added permanently into my skincare regime. I have sensitive skin and this is my go-to when I need a soothing treatment or when I break out in hives (when I carry my cat) or pimples.
Unfortunately they only have this in a 100ml size. Although you’re still able to bring it on board your flight, the bottle is a little on the heavy side to bring out everyday for an on-the-go spritz or to fit into micro bags that are so on trend right now. Skin Inc, create some travel sized Pure Serum Mists please!!! Other than that, this mist is a dream to have.
2. SKII Mid-Day Miracle Face Essence
Why I love it:
It completely fulfills every criteria of what a facial mist should be. It disperses an extra fine mist so it doesn’t get in the way of your makeup. Their website says “The Miracle Essences’ spray form atomizes the product into fine mist particles that are one-quarter the size of visible skin pores. When sprayed onto the skin, these extremely fine particles make it possible for Pitera™ and other active ingredients to have better penetration through makeup.” Couldn’t agree more! I don’t even have to blot off any excess mists on my face.
It also comes in a lightweight bottle that’s easy to carry around. Fits into most of the bags I have, even the micro ones.
Sometimes when I am lazy, I spray this instead of using SKII’s Facial Treatment Essence (FTE). This is an absolute must have on long flights
If you’re an avid SKII fan, the scent might not be new to you. However if you’re a newbie, the smell of Pitera™, SKII’s key miracle ingredient could need some getting used to. It also contains parabens.
3. SKII Mid-Night Miracle Face Essence
Why I love it:
It carries every benefit of the Mid-Day Essence mentioned above.
It contains ‘menthoxypropanediol’ which is a synthetic derivative of menthol. This ingredient is listed as an astringent that could be a possible irritant for sensitive skin. And because of that, I avoid it. Many people I’ve talked to love this mist because it has this cooling sensation when you spray it on, but if you have sensitive or irritable skin, it’s best to stick to the Mid-Day Miracle Face Essence instead of the Mid-Night version. :/
You can check out all the ingredients to avoid for sensitive skin here.
4. Allies of Skin Molecular Saviour™ Toner Mist
Why I love it:
What attracted me to this mist is this one ingredient: Rose Water. The Molecular Saviour™ Toner Mist has pure rose water that has been enhanced with a heavier molecular weight so it clings to skin cells instead of evaporating. Rose hydrosol offers healing, soothing and antibacterial benefits to the skin which is great if you are acne-prone like me!
It also contains probiotics which is a unique ingredient to have in skin care. It is said to maintain healthy balanced skin flora and reduces the appearance of acne and redness. I did not breakout from using this or had any redness. As for reduced in acne, i think i would have to test this product a little longer to find out.
As the name suggests, I would only use it as a toner and not over makeup. The bottle doesn’t mist the product as finely as I would have liked it to be. When sprayed, it delivers a very concentrated blob of product instead of a fine scattered mist. You can see what I mean below from the picture, this is sprayed at 15cm away from my hand. If you would like to use it over makeup, I would suggest spraying this at a further from your face than you normally would (although this might just waste some product as well).
The bottle is also made of glass so I tend not to bring it out because it does weight a little. Don’t get me wrong, it is a pretty neat bottle but the weight is what i’m more concerned about. All in all, the product is great but i think the packaging can be improved to administer a finer mist and a lighter bottle would be handy to bring around.
5. Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe Herbs and Rosewater
Why I love it:
Firstly, this is the most cost effective product in the lot. It’s also contains rosewater which is antibacterial. Not to mention, Mario Badescu is a reliable brand for a long time with a huge celebrity following. I am currently using their Rose Hips Nourishing Oil that works so well as a serum so this product is a must try for me.
Sensitive skin beware. There is fragrance in this product. When I purchased this, the page says that it is for all skin types and there was no fragrance in the ingredients list. But a closer look at the label when it finally arrived made me realize that it could be unsuitable for sensitive skin. So far, there isn’t any breakouts or reactions when using this product but I would still prefer one without fragrance.
Decided to use this as a body mist during a hot day instead.
Here you go. These are my top 5 favourite mists. Hope this helps you pinpoint one that may work well with your skin. Let me know if you have tried any of them! Comment below!
